Hello, Toke-lahoma!

As a brand dedicated to new adventures with new pals, we couldn’t be more excited to bring Old Pal flower to Oklahoma. Not only is it an exciting opportunity to share good vibes with the Sooner State, but it’s also another positive step for the ever-budding cannabis industry as a whole.

Oklahoma has quickly become one of the hottest markets for medicinal cannabis in the last year, hitting record sales numbers during the coronavirus pandemic. From Tulsa to Oklahoma City, dispensaries are seeing more and more people embrace the power of weed, opening exciting opportunities for Old Pal to share a healthy toke of positivity with middle America. After all, if you’re staying safe indoors, why not do it with some Old Pal?

We know there’s a lot of questions around this new venture, so we thought we’d give you a peek into Oklahoma’s cannabis culture. It’s an exciting time for this amazing state and we’re proud to be part of the movement that’s making waves through the great plains.

Medicinal, Not Recreational

While the Oklahoma cannabis market continues to grow and evolve, it’s important to remember that weed is currently only available medicinally, not recreationally. Or if you want to be more specific, the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act legalizes the licensed use, sale and growth of marijuana for medicinal purposes. The law allows patients with a license to legally possess up to three ounces on their person; up to six mature marijuana plants; six seedling plants; one ounce of concentrated marijuana; up to 72 ounces of edible marijuana; and up to 8 ounces in their residence.

Exponential Growth

Since medical legalization in 2018, Oklahoma has seen a surge in the number of shops and dispensaries, with around 15.6 dispensaries per 100,000 residents. That puts it #2 behind Oregon (with 16.5) and way ahead of California (1.6). The demand is perhaps due to how easy it is to get a license, as Oklahomans with proof of residency (over 25 years of age) can pay the $2,500 fee and potentially get the keys to their own cannabis kingdom. It should be noted that any medical marijuana operation must be 75% owned by an Oklahoma resident. With a low barrier to entry and an ever increasing demand, it’s now wonder dispensaries are popping up like Starbucks on every street.

Where Can You Toke?

According to state law, it’s legal to smoke in your home, but not in public places. You can’t just spark up a blunt while walking the dog. However, licensed patients can smoke or vape cannabis in locations regulated by Oklahoma’s “Smoking in Public Places and Indoor Workplaces Act.” Basically, If a business has a room or porch designated for toking, it’s all good — so long as you have your medical card. Some businesses have gone so far as to partner with dispensaries to create cannabis-friendly cafes and event centers. Even though this is great news for all you Oklahoma stoners, we recommend you do a little homework before you spark up a J with your cappuccino.

Positive Future

The Oklahoma medical cannabis market started fast and shows no signs of slowing anytime soon. It’s a rapidly changing landscape with endless potential for those that need the medicinal benefits of weed, as well as those who are just dipping their toes in the water for the first time. Whether it’s aspiring entrepreneurs or casual tokers, the future is burning bright for our pals in Oklahoma.
